Rehabilitation

"The act of restoring something to its original state."

Our Philosophy on Rehabilitation

Horizon believes in the value of the individual, be that in spirit or physical presence. Rehabilitation by definition is “working with what is, restoring function to the highest-level in order to help individuals continue their personal journey.”

We often think of rehabilitation as something done to an old house. We remove cabinets, rewire electrical, repaint walls, repair plaster, and lay new flooring. We do our best in these rehab projects to make our homes beautiful again, retaining the beauty of the home.

Rehabilitation of a human has some similarities to that of a home rehab. The same body is present with the goal of reworking it. Joints are replaced, muscles are retrained, there is allot of work, and some pain. Rehabilitation comes with a commitment by the patient and the therapist to achieving something new, a new level of function. Restoring lost function or mobility is difficult but extremely rewarding work for both the patient and therapist.

Horizon’s Rehabilitation Process

Your Horizon therapist will start you on the road to rehabilitation by establishing and documenting what function you have on his or her first visit. They will spend a fair portion of the first visit watching you move, measuring, testing, and moving limbs to determine a baseline or starting point. This evaluation process may seem lengthy, but it is important because it serves as the benchmark against which your progress is measured.

You will have an opportunity to discuss with your therapist which level of mobility you hope to achieve. Together you will establish a treatment plan customized to help you reach your goal.

Most visits following the first will be to target the specific goal that you have established. Do know that rehabilitation comes with homework? You will need to religiously practice the exercises and instructions given to you by your therapist to have a successful rehabilitation. Oftentimes it is exercises and other times it is using equipment and using it correctly or both. It may seem intimidating at first, but our therapists are there with you every step of the way.

Please Note:

It is during the process of rehabilitation that you are at greatest risk of falling or harming yourself. It will be important for you to carefully listen to your therapist and take the appropriate steps he/she recommends to prevent harm and have a successful recovery. Again, do not let this scare you. Horizon prides itself on having a top-notch rehabilitation team. You can be comforted to know that we are the team of choice when it comes to quick recovery and good outcomes.
